2 Month Old Baby Milestones: What to Expect
At 2 months, your baby is starting to reveal their personality. Those first genuine social smiles are appearing, and they're becoming more aware of the world around them. Here's what most 2-month-olds are doing — and how you can support their development this week.
When to worry — talk to your pediatrician
Every child develops at their own pace. Contact your pediatrician promptly if your child shows any of these signs at 2 months:
- Doesn't respond to loud sounds
- Doesn't follow moving objects with eyes

- Doesn't smile at people

Activities to try this week
3-5 min, 2-3x daily
Place baby on a firm surface with a small rolled towel under their chest. Get down to their eye level and make faces. Builds neck and upper body strength needed for rolling and sitting.
5-10 min
Hold baby about 8-12 inches from your face, make exaggerated expressions, and use a sing-song voice. Pause so they can coo back. Strengthens emotional bonding and early communication.
5 min
Show black-and-white patterned cards 8-12 inches from baby's face. Slowly move the card side to side. Supports visual tracking and attention development.
10 min
Hold baby and sway while singing simple songs. The rhythm, motion, and your voice soothe them and build early language and emotional regulation.
Common questions
Most 2-month-olds sleep 14-17 hours total: about 9-10 hours at night (with feedings) and 4-6 hours during daytime naps, usually 3-5 naps.
Social smiles typically appear between 6-8 weeks. Before that, smiles are usually reflexive or related to gas. By 2 months, most babies smile in response to your face and voice.
Breastfed babies typically eat 8-12 times per day. Formula-fed babies usually take 4-6 ounces per feeding, every 3-4 hours, totaling 24-32 ounces daily.
Yes. The Moro (startle) reflex is normal until about 3-4 months. If it persists much longer, or seems very strong, mention it to your pediatrician.
