5 Month Old Baby Milestones: Sitting & Exploring
At 5 months, your baby is becoming a little explorer. They're sitting with support, grabbing everything in reach, and may even be showing the first signs of teething. Here's what most 5-month-olds are up to.
When to worry — talk to your pediatrician
Every child develops at their own pace. Contact your pediatrician promptly if your child shows any of these signs at 5 months:
- Doesn't make vowel sounds
- Doesn't roll over in either direction
- Seems very stiff with tight muscles
- Seems very floppy
- Doesn't respond to sounds

Activities to try this week
5-10 min, 2-3x daily
Place baby on the floor surrounded by pillows or in a U-shaped nursing pillow. Put toys in front so they reach forward. Builds core strength for independent sitting.
5-10 min
Hand baby a rattle, shaker egg, or sealed container with rice. Show them how to shake it. Supports grasp development, cause-and-effect learning, and auditory processing.
5 min
Cover your face or a toy with a light scarf, then whisk it away with a surprised expression. Baby will start to anticipate the reveal. Builds object permanence and social engagement.
5 min
While baby lies on their back, gently tickle their feet and bring a toy to their toes. Many 5-month-olds discover their feet and love grabbing them. Builds body awareness and flexibility.
Common questions
Most babies sit with support by 4-5 months and independently by 6-8 months. You can help by providing supported sitting practice and plenty of tummy time.
Formula-fed babies usually take 6-8 ounces per feeding, 4-5 times daily. Breastfed babies typically nurse every 3-4 hours. Some begin solids at 5-6 months with pediatrician guidance.
Teething can begin as early as 3 months, though first teeth often appear around 6 months. Signs include drooling, chewing, fussiness, and swollen gums.
Stranger anxiety can begin around 5-6 months and typically peaks at 8-9 months. It's a healthy sign of secure attachment — baby recognizes the difference between familiar and unfamiliar people.
